What Is Depression?
Depression, or major depressive disorder, is a common but serious mood disorder that negatively affects how you feel, think, and act. It causes persistent feelings of sadness and a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. This condition can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease your ability to function at work and at home.
Common Symptoms of Depression
-
Persistent sad, anxious, or 'empty' mood.
-
Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities.
-
Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, or guilt.
-
Fatigue, decreased energy, or feeling slowed down.
-
Changes in appetite or sleep patterns.
What Causes Depression?
The exact cause of depression is not known, but it is understood to be a complex condition resulting from a combination of factors. These can include genetic predispositions, changes in brain chemistry and hormone levels, and environmental factors such as trauma, stress, or major life changes. A personal or family history of depression can also increase one’s risk.

Treatment-Resistant Depression
Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is depression that has not improved enough after trying at least two antidepressant medications at an adequate dose and for long enough. It is more common than many people realize, and it does not mean you have run out of options.
Our providers review your history and the medications you have already tried, then build a plan that may include:
- TMS therapy, a non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate the areas of the brain involved in mood.
- Spravato™ (esketamine), a nasal spray for adults with TRD. Your evaluation is done in our office, and treatment sessions with the required monitoring take place at our partner clinic.
- IM ketamine, which may bring faster relief for some patients.
- GeneSight® testing, which shows how your genes may affect your response to certain medications.
- Medication management to adjust, combine or change medications with close follow-up.
If your depression has not responded to treatment, request an appointment to talk with our team about your next step.
Who Can Benefit from Treatment?
-
Individuals experiencing persistent symptoms of depression for two weeks or more.
-
Those whose symptoms interfere with their daily life, work, or relationships.
-
People who have not found adequate relief from initial antidepressant medications.

Benefits of Professional Depression Treatment
Improved Mood and Well-Being
Effective treatment can significantly lift the persistent sadness and hopelessness associated with depression. Patients often report a renewed sense of emotional balance and a more positive outlook on life.
Increased Energy and Motivation
Depression often drains your energy, making simple tasks feel overwhelming. A successful treatment plan can help restore your physical and mental energy, improving motivation to engage with daily responsibilities and activities.
Restored Interest in Life
One of the key outcomes is rediscovering joy and interest in hobbies, social events, and passions that depression took away. This reconnection is vital for long-term emotional wellness and fulfillment.
Better Sleep and Appetite
Treatment helps regulate the physical symptoms of depression, including sleep disturbances and appetite changes. Achieving consistent sleep and balanced nutrition contributes significantly to overall recovery and stability.
Enhanced Relationships and Functioning
By alleviating symptoms, treatment can improve your ability to connect with loved ones and function effectively at work or school. This helps rebuild the social and professional aspects of your life affected by the illness.
